I have never been the type of person to shy away from expressing myself or my understandings of the world. With that in mind, this post is not an aggressive way to say I told you so, or even to make anyone wrong. It is a post about the simple deductions that likely cause increased "allergies" in youth around the western world.
Let's follow the logic on this:
Most "allergies" are diagnosed as an inability for someone to effectively eliminate the presence of coughing, sneezing, congestion or irritated sinuses.
All of these symptoms are routine methods that the body naturally uses in developing symbiotic balance between the external and internal environments during early childhood and adolescence. (bacteria are ubiquitous, so maintaining the appropriate balance of bacteria is one of the earliest essential jobs of the immune system)
If, as a child, one was unable to completely develop all of the behaviors of sneezing, coughing, congestion, etc., then they would not be effective in producing the desired balance. (if a cough does not effectively remove congestion from the lungs, it isn't a very beneficial strategy for the body)
If regular sneezing, coughing, congestion, etc. did not effectively remove dust, dirt, dander, pollen, or bacteria, chances are that this person will have a severe case of chronic symptoms. (if normal mechanisms to clear the air routes do not effectively, every spring, summer, fall and even winter might produce allergens to congest)
So how could a child not develop all of the behaviors needed to produce balance in the body? If, as parents, we were to administer cough suppressors, fever reducers, sore throat medications, and allergy medications during sensitive developmental years. The sad truth is that billions of dollars per year are spent on over-the-counter medications that suppress these physiological functions in kids.
WHY? The most implied answer is convenience. Moms and dads need to go to work, and a coughing kid is not exactly welcome with open arms at school. Kid needs to get back to soccer practice/dance class/basketball/gymnastics. Kid is having hard time focusing or needs to be "comfortable" when going on vacation. There are a thousand reasons why to suppress physiological function.
There is also the knowledge that underdeveloped immune functions like sneezing and coughing will result in a likely LIFETIME of allergy issues. So what is really the most convenient choice? To support children in their normal developmental patterns, and let kids sneeze, cough, spit, develop mucous, drool, and learn to balance their body's bacterial flora in the way they have been innately programmed to do.
